5 Tips for Holiday Flights

As we approach the Christmas holidays, here are some tips to help for a smooth (okay, smoother) flight:

1. Normally you should be at the airport two hours before your plane takes off. But, this time of year you will want to increase that up to three hours when you travel around the holidays.

2. Keep the amount of items you bring along to a minimum. If you have gifts for the family to bring with you, consider mailing them separately so they'll be there when you arrive. If you do decide to pack them, just don’t wrap them as they are subject to being inspected. Yeah, it's a hassle, but wrap the gifts when you arrive at your destination.

3. This time of year there's always a risk of the weather being a problem so make sure you're prepared. Some travelers have had their flights delayed for a couple of days due to storms coming in during these times, so be prepared. You can't control the weather and the delays, but you can help control how prepared you are for it. Make sure you have plenty of activities with you for the kids. You also want to carry snacks with you - again, you may be there for awhile.

4. If you can, print your boarding pass at home on your computer before you get to the airport. This one's a no-brainer, but make sure you TAKE IT WITH YOU! Always do a last-minute check of your travel documents and printed boarding pass.

5. The earlier you fly out the less the risk of your flight being delayed. You will find these flights are often less expensive as well. Also, if you do have an early-morning flight, do be sure to get plenty of sleep the night before, and keep the alcohol intake to a minimum. There's nothing worse than having to get up early for a flight when you've been drinking the night before.
