Best Cheap Hotel
Just received my copy of Travel + Leisure with their list of the "500 World's Best Hotels."
Now, if you're not familiar with the Travel + Leisure "best of" lists based on reader's surveys, they contain the best of the best, which means they're often the most pricey as well. For example, the top of the 500 list, according to it's rating of 92.65, is the Four Season's Resort Hualalai, with ocean views from every room. But, with doubles rates starting at $775, you won't find me there anytime soon.
Can you find some decently-priced hotels among their 500 Best Hotels of the World? Well, of course, it depends on your definition of "decently-priced," but let's say you wanted to stay at one of the top hotels in the world but didn't want to spend more than $250 per night for a double room. Where could you stay?
Hold on while I check it out...
...Uh, still looking...
...more looking...
Wait! Found one.
It's the Bar Harbor Inn & Spa, located in Bar Harbor, Maine. The inn, built in 1887, is on Frenchman Bay and has 153 rooms and 2 restaurants. According to Travel+Leisure a double here starts at $199 per night.
I checked their website and found rooms as low as $79 a night for a room with two queen beds on the first floor with a view of the grounds from March 21 - April 24.
In mid summer prices start at $199 for a non-view room.
You can also find a couple inclusive package deals for under $250 a night; the "Bar Harbor Spring Getaway" package for March 21 - May 8, 2008, which includes one night's lodging, one breakfast, one dinner and a $20 gift shop credit starting at $175 for a non-view room and $209 for an oceanfront room. Also check out their "Bar Harbor Fall Getaway" package for October 19 - November 30 starting at $185 for a non-view room and $199 for an oceanfront room. You get the breakfast, dinner and gift shop credit with this package as well.
For a place listed as one of Travel + Leisure's Top 500 Hotels in the World (with a score of 82.53), the Bar Harbor Inn & Spa seems like a winner. You can find more info about them at barharborinn.com
