Los Angeles Delis and Bars
In the process of tossing out some old magazines I found some items I thought I'd share with all of you visiting Los Angeles and wanting a great place to eat or drink.
Delis
In the October, 2007 issue of Los Angeles Magazine they list what they believe are the "Ten Best Delis" in the Los Angeles area. You have to eat deli food when you visit L.A. I think it's a law or something. Anyway, here's their top 10. Who knows, you might spot a celebrity or two at one of these great delis:
1. Brent's - 19565 Parthenia St., Northridge
2. Langer's - 704 S. Alvarado St., Los Angeles
3. Nate 'n Al - 414 N. Beverly Dr., Beverly Hills
4. Art's - 12224 Ventura Blvd., Studio City
5. Pico Kosher - 8826 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles
6. Marv's - 12512 Magnolia Blvd., North Hollywood
7. Canter's 419 N. Fairfax Ave., Los Angeles
8. Factor's - 9420 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles
9. Billy's - 216 N. Orange St., Glendale
10. Label's Table - 9226 W. Pico Blvd., Los Angeles
My favorite on the list is Art's Deli in Studio City. The parking's a pain in the..., but the food's good. Just park on a residential side street, avoiding any street where you have to have a permit. I'm a fan of Matzo Ball soup, and it's pretty good there. (Though I have to admit my favorite Matzo Ball soup is at Jerry's, which is a chain). I wasn't impressed with Billy's in Glendale, though some deli aficionado's really like it, and it's been years since I've eaten there. It was very crowded at lunch, so that's a good sign.
Bars
If you want to try a new, trendy bar in L.A., you might want to try one on Los Angeles Magazine's list of "LA's Best New Bars" which appeared in their July, 2007 issue (I really have to make a New Year's resolution to toss these things out sooner).
Here are a few from the list:
Winston's - 7746 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood
Seven Grand - 515 W. 7th St., Los Angeles
The Village Idiot - 7383 Melrose Ave., Los Angeles
Bar Lubitsch - 7702 Santa Monica Blvd., West Hollywood
Vinum Populi - 3865 Cardiff Ave., Culver City
Hyperion Tavern - 1941 Hyperion Ave., Silver Lake
Though not on the list is a new bar/restaurant called The York. The York is located at 5018 York Blvd. in Highland Park, a neighborhood in Los Angeles. If you're a tourist visiting Los Angeles you probably won't make it to Highland Park. Not really a tourist spot. But, if you want to go to a little place favored by the locals, and want a great beer selection, then stop by The York. However, I must prepare you for its location. It is on a section of York that may look a tad rundown. And it is next door to one of the smelliest pet stores I've ever walked by. Don't let its location stop you from visiting.
Okay, so now I can throw away these old magazines. Finally!
